Certification & Safety Standards
The Hokkaido Backcountry Guide Association (HBGA) maintains a rigorous three-tier certification system to ensure the highest safety standards and professional reliability in Hokkaido’s backcountry. To maintain the quality of our services, all certifications require renewal every three years.
[Role: Tail Guide / Assistant Guide] Possesses the fundamental skills required to support party safety under the direction of a Lead Guide.
Requirements:
Completion of Avalanche Companion Rescue training.
Completion of HBGA Field Training (Area-specific terrain and local knowledge).
Minimum of 2 years of backcountry experience.
Privileges: Authorized to serve as a support guide (tail guide) on tours led by an HBGA Certified Professional Guide.
[Role: Lead Guide / Main Guide] The standard professional level for guides capable of making independent risk assessments and leading guests safely through complex terrain.
Requirements:
Ability to perform on-site avalanche risk assessments (Snowpack, Weather, and Terrain).
Proven experience in instructing Avalanche Companion Rescue (Guest safety briefings).
Successful completion of the HBGA Level 2 Field Examination (Guiding and Crisis Management).
Minimum of 2 years of professional guiding experience.
Privileges: Authorized to serve as the Lead Guide (Person in Charge) for HBGA-sanctioned tours.
[Role: Instructor / Area Manager] The highest level of certification, reserved for those with elite technical skills and the ability to train future guides and manage rescue operations.
Requirements:
Ability to professionally instruct Avalanche Risk Assessment and Rescue techniques.
Mastery of advanced rescue techniques (Ropework, Victim Transport, etc.).
Minimum of 5 years of professional guiding experience.
Privileges: Authorized to act as an HBGA Examiner, Lead Instructor for guide training, and Area Manager.
To ensure all guides stay current with the latest safety protocols and techniques, all HBGA certifications must be renewed every three years.
Renewal Criteria:
Demonstrated record of active guiding practice over the 3-year period.
Mandatory participation in a "Refresher Course" covering the latest Rescue Techniques and Wilderness First Aid.
